Several people have asked us, “Why are you opening a movie on Christmas day (a Sunday) instead of the usual Friday?” In virtually all cases, whenever we open a movie on a day other than Friday, it is at the requirement of the movie’s distributor. This coming Sunday, we’ll be opening THE DARKEST HOUR from Summit Entertainment, and they felt it better to open on the 25th instead of the 23rd. This will be the first movie that we’ve opened for Summit. Because of the SUNDAY opening, we’re only able to keep 20th Century Fox’s THE SITTER on screen for two more days (Friday and Saturday). If you haven’t seen it and plan to, this is your last chance!
Emily Browning in SLEEPING BEAUTY
Opening today (Friday), is IFC’s SLEEPING BEAUTY starring EMILY BROWNING (Sucker Punch, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Ned Kelly, Ghost Ship) as Lucy, a young university student drawn into a mysterious hidden world of unspoken desires. This is not a remake of the children’s tale. The other movie opening for us today is Lars Von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA starring Kirsten Dunst, Keifer Sutherland, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. It’s a great movie to end the year with as Ann Hornaday from the Washington Post describes, “A masterwork of grandeur, millennial angst and high romantic style, “Melancholia” takes themes that have marked the best films of 2011 and spins them into a blast of cosmic sparkle dust.”
Continuing on screen is Martin Scorsese’s HUGO in 3D. This movie has been wildly popular at our theater, and it’s a fantastic movie to see in 3D because of the way it uses the third dimension to convey elements of the story. Also continuing into its second week is local filmmaker, James Westby’s RID OF ME starring Katie O’Grady. O’Grady’s performance recently gained her a nomination as BEST COMEDIC ACTRESS by the Women’s Film Critics Circle.
MONEYBALL continues into what will likely be its last week at Living Room. Brad Pitt makes this movie about baseball statistics and players mesmerizing. It’s been called “the best baseball movie EVER” and also the “best sports movie ever made.” Definitely check this out before it’s gone after next Thursday.
Rounding out our movies for this week is THE HEDGEHOG and SHOLEM ALEICHEM.
Next Friday, we’ll be picking up Clint Eastwood’s J. EDGAR starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
