Living Room’s first midnight screening ̵...

We are going to try our first ever midnight screening of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” in XpanD 3D next Thursday night (the evening of March 4th).  The movie will actually begin at the stroke of midnight, but we are selling tickets as 11:55pm on March 4th.  Come be among the first people to see “Alice in Wonderland” in glorious 3D.  In one of the first published reviews of the film, The Hollywood Reporter’s Michael Rechtshaffen says, “A fantastical romp that proves every bit as transporting as that movie about the blue people of Pandora, his Alice is more than just a gorgeous 3D sight to behold.”

Due to the availability of alcoholic beverages in our theater and OLCC restrictions, this special midnight screening will be for people 21 years of age and older only.  Tickets will be the usual $12 price for 3D films.  Our usual food and drink menu will be available for anyone who needs a late-night snack or concoction to go along with their movie.  If you’d like to put your name on the reservation list for tickets for this showing, call our box office after 2:00pm at 971-222-2005.  Reservations will be held up until 20 minutes before the start of the movie.

Free Movie Pass!...

Living Room Theaters invites you and a guest to a special advance screening of HARMONY AND ME on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:30 pm. HARMONY AND ME is a quirky, deadpan, slacker comedy starring musician Justin Rice.

You can Download Your Free Pass Here.

The hilariously deadpan comedy for the cell phone generation takes place in Austin, Texas, where a voluble young lyricist named Harmony refuses to let go of the heartbreak caused when Jessica, his girlfriend, breaks up with him. In a series of loosely improvised and very funny episodes, Harmony riffs on life and love with his friends, colleagues, and family, while fighting to win back his girl. Starring musician Justin Rice (MUTUAL APPRECIATION, lead singer of Bishop Allen) as the motor-mouthed Harmony and Kevin Corrigan (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) as his sidekick Carlos, Byington’s film presents a heartfelt portrait of a bright guy and his unsympathetic buddies dealing with heartache.

HARMONY AND ME begins a regular engagement at Living Room on Friday, February 26.

AVATAR in 3D...

AVATAR, one of the biggest films in the history of cinema, begins a run at Living Room Theaters this Friday, February 12! AVATAR screens in 3D using a technology called XpanD that is superior toavatarFront Real 3D. Living Room Theaters is the only venue in Portland that uses this technology. You can read an article about XpanD in the Oregonian HERE.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar- winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers  a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary  technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the character and the sweep of the story.

We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, lake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to  the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the Key to solving Earth’s energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human “derives” have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely- controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatar are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the native of Pandora…the Navi.

avatarblogReborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Navi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Navi female, Neytiri, saves Jake’s life,  and this change everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many test and adventure .  As Jake’s relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Navi way and Finally takes his place a, among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.

Almodóvar’s BROKEN EMBRACES...

The latBroken Embracesest from Spanish master filmmaker, Pedro Almodóvar, BROKEN EMBRACES begins a run at Living Room this Friday, February 12. This marks the first time Portlanders can see the film in high-definition showcasing Almodóvar’s legendary vibrant color-palette and striking cinematography!

A follow-up to Spanish enfant terrible Pedro Almodóvar’s 2006 arthouse sensation Volver, BROKEN EMBRACES finds the filmmaker re-teaming with actress Penélope Cruz and working on a canvas much broader than those of his previous outings, in terms of genres covered, narrative scope, and duration.

Lluís Homar stars as the former Mateo Blanco, a screenwriter and ex-director who changed his name to Harry Caine after losing his sight in an automobile accident. A past broken-embraces-lgscandal suddenly resurfaces when the news arrives that the producer of one of Harry’s old movies (Girls and Suitcases), a corrupt stockbroker named Ernesto Martel (José Luis Gómez), has died. For mysterious reasons, this makes Harry’s ex-production manager Judit (Blanca Portillo) nervous; then Ernesto’s son, Ray X (Rubén Ochandiano), turns up and asks Harry to help him write a vindictive script to get back at his vile father.

The film subsequently flashes back to the early ’90s, when Martel became involved with his secretary, Lena (Cruz), but Mateo also began to develop feelings for her, and auditioned her for Girls and Suitcases. In response to Mateo’s interest in Lena (and her burgeoning interest in him), the jealous Martel commissioned Ray to make a documentary about the making of Girls and Suitcases as an excuse to spy on the director and star.

broken1blogThis enabled him to watch Mateo spiriting off with Lena right under his nose, and set the stage for the wily producer’s elaborate revenge against Mateo. As this synopsis suggests, Almodóvar uses a tricky structure laden with flashbacks to both comment on and explain the events of the present; he also interweaves a noirish sensibility throughout the picture that marks something of a first for this director.

Best of 2009: THE BEACHES OF AGNES...

Living Room presents a special engagement of one of the finest films of 2009, The Beaches of Agnes, beginning February 12. A lovely, elegant, cinematic self-portrait, The Beaches of Agnes is an autobiographical documentary from filmmaker Agnes Varda. Shawn Levy of the Oregonian says, “There’s immense humanity and poignancy and pathos in the film, but wit and whimsy as well: Varda is not one of your ascetic aesthetes but rather a full-blooded woman who relishes the sensations of being alive.” naming the film number 2 on his top ten of 2009!

beachesagnesblog

Celebrated filmmaker Agnes Varda (Cleo From 5 to 7) turns the camera on herself for this autobiographical documentary. While roaming the beach, the beatific 80-year-old revisits her past–including memories of fellow Left Bank directors Jacques Demy (later her husband), Alain Resnais, and Chris Marker. Incorporating clips from Varda’s work, animation, and photographs, the film plays like a fond scrapbook of a life well lived.
